Spring is the time to fertilise. First, do a soil test, so you know what the soil needs. Then use a quality brand of granular fertiliser. If your soil has become compacted, now is the time to aerate the lawn.

During summer water your lawn 2 to 3 times a week if rain is scarce. Treat weeds.

Early autumn is also the time to fertilise and aerate. This will promote strong root growth during the winter months. Sharpen your mower blade and set the mower high, leaving a clearance of about 2 inches.

Remember to water your lawn every 3 to 4 weeks if it doesn’t rain. Grasses may grow slowly during the winter but they still require watering. Towards the end of winter, talk to your local garden centre about applying a quality herbicide.
